This weekend I was planning our lunches for the week. We do not buy our lunches-school lunches are $1.75 per child, which would be $5.25/day or $26.25 a week. I can pack a healthy lunch for much less than that. Here are a few tips:
Instead of prepackaged bags of raisins, chips, pretzels, etc, MAKE YOUR OWN! It is far less expensive to purchase a large box of raisins or bag of pretzels and put them into snack containers. *tip: if you use baggies, save time by filling the bags the weekend prior, so all you need to do is pop a bag into your lunch box each day*
Use a reusable thermos instead of juice boxes. My kids prefer water (thank goodness) – so I fill half a bottle with water the night before and place them in the freezer. In the morning I fill the rest up with water. It keeps the water cold all day!
Invest in reusable containers. I bought sandwich holders for all the kids, on clearance in the $1 section at Target (they were 75% off – making them only .25 each. They will last for years!
This is what I packed for my kids first day of school:
- Peanut butter (FREE-during Publix sale)
- jelly(approximately $0.07 serving)
- 2 slices wheat bread (.20)
- mini carrots ($0.15)
- raisins (.18)
- chocolate goldfish (.08) stocked up during Publix sale
