When I first began couponing, almost 6 years ago, I made the HUGE mistake of “deal chasing“. What is deal chasing? A deal would pop up online and I would clip and RUN to the store. At the time I had 2 little ones, so I would pack them up and head on out. On Saturday night, I would stay up late prepping and would wake up before the rest of the house and run to the drug stores to get all my deals before church. I was even guilty of going to 3 or 4 drug stores looking for the deals. Needless to say, I crashed and burned. It was exciting at first, then I dreaded it, then I stopped cold turkey.
I’m here to tell you that this can wear on you pretty quick. I was so afraid of missing a deal, that I was missing out on other more important things in life. I’m still all about a good deal, but no more “deal chasing” for me.
So, if you’re not running to the store at the crack of dawn on Sunday, can you still get the deal? Absolutely! My answer: RAINCHECKS. No more stressing out. If there is a deal that is HOT and I get to the store and it’s not there, I get a raincheck. That way, I can then come back at my leisure to get the deal. Ahhh – I love sleeping in on Sundays (well, til 8 when I start getting everyone ready for church). Most weeks I don’t even step foot in the stores on Sunday. I know that if the deal is there on Monday or Tuesday – GREAT – if not, I get my stack o’ rainchecks
I LOVE MY RAINCHECKS! Rainchecks are good for 2 things. One, I can shop at my leisure as I stated above. Two, I have time to gather more coupons together and get more deals.
Of course there are some exceptions, some instances when a raincheck can not “save your sanity”. If you’re shopping at Walgreens, you can not get a raincheck on a Register Reward Deal. Boo. But, you can get rainchecks on other Walgreens Deals as well as CVS ECB deals! Another issue would be if your coupon is expiring, you may have some trouble. However, I have found in many cases, if I ask for a manager and (nicely!) explain the situation and show them my coupon, they will let me use my coupon past it’s expiration date. It’s all about being nice and getting to know your managers/cashiers.
Another option is ordering items ahead. Some stores will allow special orders, some will not. Check with your store.
And, finally, keep in mind that the deal will most likely come around again! Sales and coupons go in cycles. So if you miss out on a deal, don’t get upset, it will most likely show up again.
