As part of the Monkey Kingdom Event, I had the pleasure to interview Disneynature Ambassador, Dr. M. Sanjayan.
Here is a little background information on Dr. M. Sanjayan:
DR. M. SANJAYAN (Disneynature Ambassador) is executive vice president and senior scientist for Conservation International. The global conservation scientist, writer and Emmy® nominated news contributor focuses on the connection between nature and human well-being. He serves on Conservation International’s senior leadership team as executive vice president and senior scientist.
Sanjayan is the host of “EARTH A New Wild,” the 2015 PBS television series. Filmed in 29 countries and produced by National Geographic and Passion Pictures, the series reveals how humans are inextricably linked with wild nature
I am still in awe at how much this man loves what he does. It was very refreshing to speak with someone that has so much passion and so much love for animals, conservation, and the movie Monkey Kingdom. The excitement was contagious. I honestly walked away from this interview with a new view on Sri Lanka, monkeys, and all endangered animals. I would love to travel to Sri Lanka and similar places throughout the world to view these amazing creatures in their habitat.
When asked about growing up in Sri Lanka, Dr. Sanjayan let us know that the monkeys do run freely through the villages and it’s very common to see them swinging through the trees. They can also be found swinging on power lines and cell phone towers. I don’t know about you, but this makes me nervous. I think my mom side tends to worry about the little guys falling or getting electrocuted. He let us know it is possible, and it probably does happen, but humans have taken over much of the monkeys habitat, so it is unavoidable.
Thankfully, the villages are very tolerant of the monkeys and they have learned to coexist peacefully.
Dr. Sanjayan let us know that one of his favorite scenes from the new Disneynature movie, Monkey Kingdom, is the scene where the monkeys are in the water scouring for food. Although he grew up in Sri Lanka, he had never witnessed these monkeys jumping in the water, diving down, sometimes quite deep, to scavenge for food.
Dr. Sanjayan’s newest project, “Earth A New Wild” will air in February on PBS. And be on the lookout for another upcoming project that he could not disclose just yet. He did let us know that it’s going to be very exciting as it is something that has not been done before here in the U.S. He also mentioned that it has to do with oceans…..stay tuned!
MONKEY KINGDOM opens in theaters everywhere on April 17th!
Be sure to see Monkey Kingdom opening week (April 17 – 23)! By purchasing tickets during opening week, Disneynature will make a donation in your honor to protect monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitats. Projects support programs across Indonesia, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka.
