Are you considering a Florida Prepaid College Plan? Is there anything holding you back?
We made the decision years ago to put our children’s education on the top of our priority list. There were dozens of questions that we had when making the choice to use Florida Prepaid College Plans to help us save for our children’s future education. There were TWO questions we had that almost stopped us from choosing Florida Prepaid College Plans. So we spoke with a representative from customer service and were relieved to find our answers.
What if we move out of Florida?
As with any job, we were unsure where my husbands business would take us. We were concerned that if we moved out of Florida, we would lose our benefits of the Florida Prepaid College Plan. That is not the case! If you move out of Florida after purchasing a Prepaid Plan, your child would still be billed at in-state tuition rates when using their plan at a Florida college or state university. Moving out of Florida does not affect the benefits of either plan. This is especially significant for children with Florida Prepaid College Plans because they will still be eligible for in-state tuition and fees when they attend a Florida College or State University with their plans. WOW! That was very comforting. Knowing that in the event my husbands job moved to another state, my kids would still be able to go to a Florida school an pay the IN-STATE tuition rates. Or, if they chose to go to a different school outside of Florida, they would not lose any of the money we put into the plan.
It looks like we will be staying in Florida for good now. But, I know that many of you out there probably had the same concerns.
What If Your Child Doesn’t Go To College?
My children are currently excelling in school. They have all been on the honor roll since they started school. I have no doubt that they will continue to succeed in school and get into college without a problem. But, that may not be their plan. My 8th grader is a straight A student. She is very smart and excelling in her classes. However, she is very talented in musical theater. She has expressed an interest in Broadway plays and I would support her in heading to New York after high school to fulfill her dream, if that was her choice. In that case, would I lose all of the money I have saved over the last few years?
While Prepaid Plans are designed to used at a Florida College or State University, the amount covered by the plan can also be applied at other schools nationwide. And if any of my children decide to not go to college, I can simply change the beneficiary of the Prepaid Plan and transfer the funds to another child, or myself, or I could opt to get our money back!!
