Did you know that BIC® is celebrating 30 years of helping kids reach their potential??
One very important way kids can work on reaching their potential, is by working on their handwriting skills. There are many reasons why handwriting is important. We should encourage our children to write. These days, texting and typing are used so often that kids forget about writing a letter to a friend or creating a hand written card. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for technology. I really am. But, we can’t lose the art of writing in the process.
This summer I made sure my kids had plenty of reading and writing time. For the first half of the summer we focused on reading. One hour per day Monday – Friday. The second half of the summer, we did would write in journals about our summer. They created a type of scrapbook to remind them of all the fun activities we did all summer.
I know it can be rough to get the kids writing. Especially when there are so many electronic devices out there. I’ve noticed my older kids (12 & 14) are the hardest to convince to write instead of email, text, etc.
Here are some more fun ideas for getting your child to write at home:
*Let the kids pick out fun writing instruments. Bic offers a wide variety of colors and designs.
*Let them pick out a fun and inspiring notebook that they are excited about. Their favorite animal or boy band could be on the cover?
*Decorate the notebook cover. My girls especially love to decorate the front covers of their notebooks and journals.
*Start a journal. Going on vacation? Starting a new hobby? Have them journal all about it. Add pictures they take or they can add newspaper or magazine photos to personalize.
*Have a dedicated journaling time each day or every other day.
*Head out to nature and draw what you see. Write a sentence or two about the picture.
