Each winter we head up north to have fun in the snow. Living in Florida, this is a huge treat for the kids every year. They look forward to this trip all year long. We usually head out right after the first of the year. Having a bigger family, I’m always looking for the most economical ways to make this fun vacation happen each year.
Make it a road trip! With a large family, plane tickets are not an option. They can be so expensive. And the thought of purchasing 6 tickets is just crazy. We pack the van full of our gear and just go! Bonus: you can stop along the way for extra snow fun!
Shop for winter gear at Sierra Trading Post. This will save your family money since they offer a wide selection of products on closeout products, that were overstocked, or have minor blemishes or irregularities. I love that they have the top brands that my kids love to wear. Also, 98% of all orders ship within one business day!!
Check out this The North Face Mountain Triclimate® Jacket – 3-in-1 (For Little and Big Girls) in Metallic Silver. BOTH of my girls love The North Face and I love that it keeps them warm from the bitter temps during winter.
And, ski pants are not found in Florida. Believe me, I’ve looked. Thankfully, Sierra Trading Post has a wide selection of ski pants for the entire family.
And then there are snow boots. Good boots that will keep your feet warm and withstand snow and ice can also be found at Sierra Trading Post. Men, women, and children sizes are available at a great price.

Rent a cabin or house instead of a hotel. This is a HUGE money saver for us. The perks are endless. We can do our laundry while on vacation. This is a must with all the wet socks and clothes from tubing and skiing. Avoid eating out for every meal and save a ton. We make one trip to the store upon arrival and stock the kitchen for the week. We cook all our meals instead of eating over prices restaurant meals. Be sure to shop around for the best cabin/home prices well in advance. Typically traveling during the week will be cheaper than a weekend stay.
