I HEART SQUISHY Squibbles
In April I attended a blogger event at Pixar Studios. We went back to school at Monsters University and met with the masterminds behind this awesome movie. If you have seen the movie then you know who Squishy is. How could you miss him? He is adorable and, well, Squishy!! He is my favorite and I HEART SQUISHY! He is just so darn loveable. And if you have NOT seen the movie, what are you waiting for? You’re in for a good laugh and a great story line with awesome characters like Squishy!
During the Monsters University Event, we met with Pete Sohn, the voice behind Squishy. Out of all the interviews we did at Pixar, Squishy (Pete Sohn) made me laugh the most. He, like his character, is very entertaining.
How did you get this role?
It’s funny. I’ve played Emile in Ratatouille here. And it was like you’re chubby. And you’ll eat funny food. So why don’t you play this guy? I’m like okay. And then this is kind of like you’re chubby. And you’re kinda nerdy too. So why don’t you give this a shot? Um, but it’s– it’s– it’s funny!
Describe your character Squishy Squibbles.
I like that he’s so sincere about like kind of naïve things. You know, like, there’s a scene in there where Mike and Sully want to throw a party. And he’s like this is great. Grab some couch cushions ’cause we’re gonna build a fort. I totally connect with that type of guy just ’cause that’s how I grew up with my cousins. We didn’t have the Internet. So the world was so like out there. For us it was just like Oh my God. You have the one piece of Lego like whatever that is that you can just nerd out for a while.
And, it was that naïve sincerity that I really really liked about him. And then Julia Sweeney came who plays his mom. I had that lunch with her. You’ve seen like, wow, she’s so brilliant. And then seeing in the reels how he’s embarrassed of his mom but still totally like, yeah, that’s– that’s my mom. He still loves her but totally living this weird 30-year-old living with his
mom kind of feeling of it.
Does your family tease you?
Yeah, it’s so funny ’cause most of my family is all Korean. So my brother will say, “All I can hear is you. I can’t see anything else. The movie’s ruined because of that.” I’m so sorry. And “Mom, did you see the movie? What’d you think?” She doesn’t understand the English as well. So she doesn’t know but she knows it’s my voice.
Monsters University is in theaters NOW. Be sure to check it out and I’m certain you will fall in love with Squishy, Mike, Sully, and all the other awesome characters!
*Disclosure: I was provided with an all expenses paid trip to Pixar Studios during a blogger event. All opinions are mine.
