Interview with Dan Scanlon, Producer of Monsters University
As I’ve posted about previously, I was able to visit Pixar Animation Studios in San Francisco for the Monsters University Event (Opens in theaters June, 21 2013). We had so much fun! And we learned so much about how movies are made and just how talented all the animators are.
During our trip, we interviewed Monsters University Director Dan Scanlon. I enjoyed hearing about all the ideas the team had before coming up with the final product. There were many challenges that the team had to overcome, but when you see the movie, you see that they did a great job pulling it all together into an awesome film.
One of the challenges the director faced was deciding what age the characters should be in the film. In the original Monsters Inc. there is a line where Mike says, “you’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade.” So, initially, they toyed with the idea of having Mike and Sulley meet in Elementary school. But it just did not fit for the storyline they had. It took quite a bit of time to discuss and decide that it would be okay to kind of ignore that line from the first movie and move forward with the boys meeting in college.
Another challenge was creating a kids movie with and about monsters, that was not too scary for kids, since that is the main audience for this movie! Again, once you see the movie, you will see that the movie presents monsters in a funny – lighthearted manner. Not very scary at all. I will say that the Dean of the school, has a scary presence, but I still honestly think most kids will be just fine watching the movie!
