Being a mom is full time job. Times four. From that first day 15 years ago, when my oldest son was born, all the way to today, with my 4 kids and my crazy busy life, I am always thinking and planning for my kids future. Now more than ever as I have a son finishing up his freshman year in high school and a daughter that is deciding where she wants to go to high school, college is on all of our minds.
I mentioned in an earlier post that there was one huge promise that my husband and I made when we were ready to start a family. That promise is that we would work hard to be sure our children did not have to start their adult years in debt. We knew that we needed to start saving when they were babies. We also knew that education is extremely important and that we would not only save for their future, but we would push them to make education and grades a priority. College is not cheap. College for four children is definitely not cheap. We push our kids in school to do their best. We know that even with amazing grades, the competition can be fierce when it comes to college scholarships. We want to be sure that they are as prepared mentally, socially, and financially for college.
That is why we chose Florida Prepaid. I want to discuss the top reasons that we love Florida Prepaid and how it works for us and so many friends and family that we know.
BUDGET FRIENDLY OPTIONS
I know that many families are on a budget like us. We knew to budget in for college savings when we started our family. And with each additional child, we were sure to save a little more each month. I’m happy to share that Florida Prepaid plans start as low as $46 per month! There are many options available to you and your family based on your needs, when you start saving (kids ages), and your budget.
What if my child goes to an out of state college?
My oldest daughter has her mind set on Julliard. (wow!) I understand this question. . Florida Prepaid College plans are NOT restricted to Florida schools. Many have this myth in their mind, but it’s simply not true. While Florida prepaid was meant for Florida schools, every cent can be used toward an out of state college as well.
What if my children receive scholarships?
We are already applying for scholarships for both of my older children. My 7th grader and my 9th grader. I encourage my children to apply for all scholarships that they possibly can. This will not affect your plan. If a child gets a scholarship like Bright Futures, for example, the amount covered by a plan, not just what was paid in, can be refunded, transferred to another family member or used to pay for tuition and fees not covered by the scholarship. This actually happened to my brother in law. His college was paid for by a scholarship (100%). So he transferred his Florida Prepaid Account to his brother!
