I grew up in Kissimmee, Florida and have been able to watch it grow over the last 27 years. I moved to Kissimmee from Buffalo,NY (what a change!) when I was 6yrs old. I Attended Kissimmee schools and stayed right through until graduation. When I was invited back to Kissimmee to check out some of their hidden treasures I was very excited!
Many people visit Kissimmee to go to the theme parks and forget all about all the wonderful nature adventures Kissimmee has.

Our first stop-airboat rides at Boggy Creek Airboats. I remember heading to Lake Toho as a kid with my dad. We called it the Lakefront. Not sure if the locals still call it that or not? We never tried out the airboats on this particular lake, so I was in for a new experience. If you have never been on an airboat, it is amazing!! Some of the girls were a little nervous – they are loud, but no worries, you are provided with earphones-and they work great!!

Be sure to bring your camera along as you’re sure to capture some awesome pictures of alligators and birds. Many different birds can be found throughout your ride. The airboat guide was very very informative. And he knew exactly where to find momma alligator and her babies too!
If you’re wondering if this is for the kids too, YES! I know that all 4 of my kids would have enjoyed this ride. My kiddos are 4, 5, 9, and 11. After the ride is over-you can hold, pet, and take a photo with a baby alligator too. And it’s safe!!
Prices vary depending on what kind of tour you choose. Next time, we are going to try out the NIGHT time boat ride! The kids will love checking out the gators shiny night-eyes.
If you’re looking for an all-day excursion-check out Makinson Island. Makinson is located in Lake Toho as well. It’s a large island with plenty of land to explore. The kids will love walking through the trees looking for Bald Eagle Nests. We took the entire self-guided foot tour. What a great way to experience the “real” Florida.
Camping is also available on Makinson Island (Primitive Camping).
