I am so excited to share about my experience with The Great Courses Plus, a company that provides online learning courses from some of the world’s greatest professors. They offer the capability of unlimited streaming from your TV, tablet, laptop, or phone!
Let me start off by letting you know that I have been toying with the idea of going back to school. I don’t know if it’s an early midlife crisis or not, but I’ve been going back and forth trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up! I’m in my
mid late thirties and after taking a very long break from school after getting married and having kids, I’m at a point in my life where my kids are getting older and I am looking to possibly further my education or just learn more about topics I am interested in. I don’t exactly want to go for my masters or doctorate. I just want knowledge. I want to learn more about the subjects that help me with my current job as a blogger, social media influencer, and I’d love to learn more about the hobbies I enjoy as well. So, I was quite ecstatic when I was asked to check out The Great Courses Plus. I love the idea of having online learning courses at my fingertips.
The Great Courses Plus is a subscription on-demand video learning service with top-notch lectures and courses from top professors from the Ivy League and other great universities globally and experts from places like National Geographic, The Smithsonian, and the Culinary Institute of America. They offer unlimited access to nearly 8,000 video lectures. So, you are sure to find what you’re looking for. Choose from a variety of categories like history, science, music, or health. Or maybe you want to brush up on your favorite hobby like cooking or travel! The Great Courses Plus truly has something for everyone.
I chose to take a photography class. I purchased a Cannon Ti-83 a few years ago. I have been meaning to take classes to learn to use it correctly, but our local state college never offered classes at the times I could attend. Between running the kids to baseball, softball, chorus, homeschooling my youngest, plus juggling a job and all the day to day responsibilities as a mom, I just could not cut out two nights a week to spend at the college. So I just continued to wing it with my photography, which is really not the right thing to do in my field of work. I was so happy to find an amazing photography class with a professional teacher. There were a few to choose from. I chose “Fundamentals of Photography” taught by a professional photographer who is also an award-winning photographer for National Geographic magazine.

The course has 24 classes to watch. They are approximately 30 minutes each. I love that I could watch the classes on my schedule. I could also pause for a phone call or a “hey mom I’m hungry” from the other room. I also found myself backing up a few times to review some information and I even took a screenshot or two for my notes. I got through four lessons so far. I have already learned about shutter speed and aperture and have put this knowledge to use to improve my skills. The teacher is very knowledgable and keeps the class interesting by showing many examples of his own work as well as mistakes he has made with his own camera.
