Crystal here! As you heard from Mary, I am going to run the 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon at Disney World in February. I have a few friends that will be doing the 13.1 miles with me! I will also be doing the Royal Family 5K with Mary along with a group of friends. This will be my 3rd Disney Princess Half Marathon & I am excited to train to improve not only my finish time, but my overall health. So, as Mary will be letting you know about her 5K training, I will be letting you know about my 1/2 Marathon training also.
Why do I do these runs?
Well, let me start off by saying that I’ve NEVER been the most athletic person. Back in February 2010, a couple of co-workers of mine were talking about doing the Disney Princess 5K the following month. I asked if I could join them. I knew I had never ran or jogged, but it was motivation to get me moving (plus I needed to lose weight to fit into a bridesmaids dress that coming April – that I had ordered a size smaller! Talk about MOTIVATION!!) I finished that 5K & it felt great to cross the finish line!
Later in the year, I decided I wanted to do the 2011 Princess Half Marathon. First, I will admit, that it is very hard staying on track during the holidays. So many excuses are out there & I probably made a lot of them. However, I did finish!! The emotion that I felt at that finish was so amazing! Yes, I cried! However, I trained only on the treadmill at the gym, BIG MISTAKE! I had no idea the impact of walking/jogging on pavement was. My body ached afterwards, but the feeling of FINISHING was a much better feeling, which made it worth it! So my biggest advice is to get running outdoors!
I am going to be following the 19 Week Disney’s Princess 1/2 Marathon 2013 Training Program which begins tomorrow. You can also find the beginner’s training program for this and other races here. Only 3 weekly training days are needed: 30-45 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday, and a longer session on the weekend.
